I have known Mike for years but knew him best from the many trips we took to Cuba along with other friends over the past decade or so, the last being in Feb 2020 with just him and I going to a resort we had visited before near Guantanamo until Covid 19 shut everything down. The last time I saw him was a few months ago at a Christmas Eve social gathering and dinner that we had been regularly attending for several years now and we talked about going back to Cuba in Feb of this year, me mainly for the sunny weather, however I believe that Mike really wanted to go just for the sake of checking up on a dog he had befriended the last time we were there in a village just off the resort that we named Fiddle who had a mostly amputated lower paw, could still run with a limp and had sad eyes. Sadly, that trip never came to be, however that's who Mike was. His love and respect for animals was bottomless and written all over him and he deeply cared for the ones that had their own challenges. That's only one of the many facets that made him such a special person. May you Rest In Peace Mike.

I am very sorry to read of Michael’s passing. I remember when we all ran back and forth between each others houses when we lived on the hill in Walton, Although my most vivid memories are of Bryan , I remember us all playing baseball, hide n seek and stone school.Even though your family only lived in Walton for a short time, I have very good memories of those years Michael was a very polite, quiet child, always with a smile. It was so good to reconnect with Ray ( and Brigitte) in 2022. Please accept my sincere sympathy . Susan ( King) MacAskill

‘Long ago and far away’… Michael was my first friend in this life. I was born the same month as Michael far away from him down East. In 1961, when we were about 6 months old, Michael’s parents and my parents moved into houses separated by only one other house in a small mining community in Nova Scotia, where our fathers were employed by the mining company. Michael and I became friends before we could walk and talk. There were lots of children in our neighbourhood to play with, yet Michael and I stuck to each other like sap to a tree. In fact, the spruce tree under which Michael and I played in childhood still stands on the property where the Yuskiws lived in the 1960s – I bought that property twenty years ago, and hearing stories now about Michael’s skills I wish I had had his expertise to help restore the house. In 1966 Michael and I started school together. We lived close enough to walk, but for 5/6-year-olds it was a long walk. In the spring – right about this time of year – on our way home from school we would splash in the melting snow water running in the ditches, getting soaked and laughing… until our mothers caught sight of us! Michael’s family moved away from NS in summer 1967, and I saw Michael only once after that, four years later when the Yuskiws returned for a visit. Michael and I found a spruce tree by the beach to sit under in the shade on a hot summer afternoon, and at age 10 piked up our friendship like no time had passed at all (though four years is eternity in childhood). After that memorable day in 1971, though I never saw him again, I never forgot my friend and I always hoped one day our paths would cross. They did, indirectly, in summer 2022 when Michael’s brother Raymond travelled to NS and decided to look for the old homestead. He found it, and with it he found Michael’s childhood friend, and so through Ray and Brigitte Michael and I were able to say ‘hello’ again after more than fifty years! I am grateful we got to exchange that ‘hello’ in our 62nd year of life and acknowledge our childhood friendship as never forgotten. Farewell for now, Michael; we’ll have our reunion in the hereafter. I miss you Michael. You were there to offer help more than anything, and all the time you didn't care about making less. I had to put more money on the table and buy you gift cards so I didn't feel I was taking advantage of our friendship. We ran into each other in Taste of Danforth one time and it was really nice walking with you and buying food together. Rest in peace. You will be deeply missed. Ben

I am very sorry to hear of Mike's death. My name is Megan Whittingham and I am the sister of Anthony Whittingham, Valerie Pringle and Lorna Lang. I live in the Seattle area. I return every summer to Toronto to go to the family cottage on Lake of Bays which we inherited from our father. "Miracle Mike" was the legendary genius who painted, repaired and mended so many things at our cottage. I had heard about Mike before I ever met him. I found him quiet and friendly with a twinkle in his eye. He was well-read and very well-informed. He was easy going and very hard-working. We will all miss him.
