Obituary of Jim Downey

James (Jim) Edward Downey

April 28, 1947 – February 2, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Edward Downey on February 2, 2025, at Toronto General Hospital. Born April 28, 1947, in Belleville, Ontario, Jim lived a life full of love, friendship, and dedication to his community.

Son of the late Ralph and Kathryn Downey, Jim was predeceased by his beloved siblings Judy, Colleen, and John. He is survived by his sisters Mary and Patty, brother-in-law Allan. He will be missed by many cherished nieces, nephews, and McCormick and Downey cousins.

Jim had a passion for baseball, as a fan and a dedicated player. A proud member of the Cabbagetown Group Softball League for 40 years. He found great pleasure in the game and coached and inspired many players. He was thrilled to be inducted into the NAGAA Hall of Fame in San Francisco in 2001. He showed off his beloved baseball caps, and was always cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays.

A dedicated high school teacher and librarian at the Etobicoke School of the Arts, Jim inspired generations of students with his love of learning, including annual school trips to the Guggenheim Museum in New York with his dear friend Heather. He was a strong advocate for the Toronto gay community, offering support and friendship. Jim’s humour and generous spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to a local LGBTQ+ organization.
