Obituary of Mary Elspeth Trusz

Trusz, Mary Elspeth (nee Ireland) November 8, 1933 – July 2, 2025.

After a short illness Mary is now at peace. Predeceased by her loving husband of 36 years Leo, her sister Joyce, her grandson John and her parents Alma (nee Butson) and Gordon Ireland. Dearly missed by her children Tara Lynn (Jack Goodman) and Mark (Jill Barber). Cherished grandmother of Jessie (Kristin Lee) and Mitchell Yelle. Always in the hearts of siblings Sandra Basso (Howard), Karen MacDonald, and Glen Ireland (Nancy).  Fondly remembered by her sisters-in-law Vicky Bechard and Betty Werhun, her brother-in-law George Trusz (Anne) and her many nieces, nephews and their families.

Mary was a strong, independent woman who focused on family, faith and service to the community.

She was a dedicated congregation member and a lead soloist at All Peoples United Church in Sudbury.  Later, Mary found a supportive community of friends at St. Andrew’s United Church. Together they would serve meals at the Out of the Cold program, organize fundraising events and meet weekly for coffee at Leinala’s Bakery.

Mary was a longstanding member of Beta Sigma Phi and volunteered at the Dragon Boat Races on Ramsay Lake

She graduated from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in 1954.  She began her career in the hospital emergency room and then decided to share her skills as a nursing educator at St. Elizabeth’s and at the Sudbury Regional School of Nursing where she became school principal.  Mary ended her over 35 year career teaching at Cambrian College.

In retirement Mary enjoyed travelling the world either with friends and family or on a group tour. She loved cruises in the South Pacific, Antarctic, Panama Canal and northern Europe.  In March 2020 Mary moved to Christie Gardens in Toronto to be closer to her family. She most enjoyed the conversations with her neighbours and the many music programs offered.

The family will gather for a private interment in Sudbury.  Donations in Mary’s memory to a charity of your choice are appreciated.
