Obituary of James William Cope
James William “Jim” Cope
The world got a little quieter on August 8th, 2025, when James William Cope, known to most as Jim, Sir, or Uncle Jim, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre in Toronto. He left this world in peace surrounded by his children and with his favorite tunes playing.
Jim was a proud Canadian Navy man, (may the good Lord help you if he ever caught you littering) who later dropped anchor in Peterborough, where he became something of a local legend. Always a guitar in hand and a song eager to be sung, he entertained friends, strangers, and anyone within earshot. His quick wit and endless supply of (often inappropriate) jokes could light up a room brighter than a spotlight.
A true social butterfly (let's be honest, party animal) , Jim loved people as much as they loved him. He was happiest when surrounded by friends. Especially his lifelong companions Panty Egg, Mike Harmon, and Chuck O’Neil. No doubt he’s already been jamming with those who went before him, including April, Rick, Ronny, his beloved Sharon, his brothers and sisters, mom and dad, and his dear pal Eggplant.
Jim was also a gifted artist, with talents like painting, drawing, writing, and music. He lived eccentrically, laughed loudly, and never missed an opportunity for a good pun.
Though he may have sailed on from these shores, Jim’s humor, art, music, and big-hearted spirit will be in our hearts forever. We will remember him with a smile.. and maybe a cheesy joke or two.
Fair winds and following seas, Jim Sir.
No service will be held at this time but blessings in Jim's name can be made to the Alzheimers Society of Canada.
Return to the Delta
They took the call to service
As many have before,
To soar like eagles day and night
From near and distant shore.
We mourn their missing friendships
Ne'er more to speak with them.
Mere memories are all we have
Until we meet again.
The Delta beckons all of us
In time once more we'll form.
Going home to tell our comrades
And with them, again be born.
