Obituary of Barbara Ann Steer

Barbara Ann Steer
June 18, 1938 – January 2, 2026

Barbara (Barb) Ann Steer passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026 surrounded by love and light at the age of 87. Born in Sudbury on June 18, 1938, Barb spent most of her life in Toronto, a city she knew intimately and loved deeply.

The daughter of Evelyn and James Munro, Barb grew up in Toronto’s St. James Town neighbourhood, where she attended Rose Avenue Public School. She later completed her secondary education in Chatham, Ontario, before earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Queen’s University in Kingston, an achievement that reflected her lifelong love of learning, science and reading.

Barb enjoyed a successful and respected career in the pharmaceutical industry before retiring to dedicate her time to her community. In retirement, she volunteered with Literacy East Toronto, a cause close to her heart. A lifelong lover of reading, she firmly believed that literacy is foundational to opportunity, dignity, and connection.

Fiercely independent, sensible, and effortlessly classy, Barb approached life with clear-eyed practicality and no-nonsense views. She was deeply respectful of differences and valued autonomy, fairness, and integrity.

Barb loved to entertain and was a fabulous cook, delighting family and friends with both her hospitality and her high standards for her sous-chefs, particularly her sister Marg. She enjoyed picnicking and attending local theatre with friends, tending her garden and doting on her beloved cat Minnie (possibly the most spoiled pet on the planet) and was a skilled and generous quilter and knitter. Tennis was another great love, and through years of play she formed enduring friendships that meant a great deal to her. She also had a lifelong affection for the Toronto Blue Jays, following the team faithfully and never short of an opinion on how their season was going.

Barb was predeceased by her brothers Don (Wayne) and Grant. She is survived by her sisters Eleanor (Stew) and Margaret and will be remembered with great affection as an amazing aunt to Andrew (Jennifer), Kevin, Jennifer (Darren), Jeff, and Meredith (Steve), and as a devoted great-aunt to Rain (Sébastien), Madeleine, Avalon, Cullan, Ridley, Trinity, Madelyn, and Sophie. Barb was also predeceased by her dearest friend Pamela (John), who's children Edward (Carol) and Simon (Liz), and grandchildren Jai, Joe, Sophie, Jacob and Ollie were so very dear to her. She will also be missed greatly by her wonderful and true friends Thom, Dwight, Judy, Bonnie, and many others.

Per her wishes, cremation has taken place. Barb will be interred at the Toronto Necropolis later this year, when the flowers are blooming, alongside her brother Don, a most fitting resting place for an amazing woman who loved Toronto and lived her life fully within it.

Barb was passionate about supporting adult literacy and her local food bank. In her memory, please consider supporting a local charity, whether through a donation or by giving your time. Barb believed deeply in the power of small, local organizations and how much individual support can truly make a difference.

May she rest in peace, and may her kindness and spirit live on in all who knew her.
