Obituary of Shirley Kozel

It is with deep sadness and profound love, that we announce the sudden passing of Shirley Kozel, 79, at Mississauga Hospital, on March 2, 2026. A loving wife to Richard Lindsay for 46 years, and devoted mother to Alyssa Lindsay (David Bejzyk), Shirley was a cherished sister, aunt, and dear friend to many. She genuinely cared for her friends and family and would go above and beyond for them in any way she could.

Born in Edmonton, AB, to Paul and Maria (Los) Kozel, shortly after they immigrated from Belarus ahead of WWII, Shirley was the youngest of nine siblings. Shirley grew up in Seba Beach, AB, and Rockwood, ON, and graduated from high school in Guelph.

After high school, Shirley moved to Toronto and pursued a corporate secretarial career, advancing to executive leadership roles in several mining companies. Her hard work, organizational skills, ability to learn quickly, and willingness to take on leadership were
highly valued strengths.

Her second career was focused on supporting her community and family, investing her time and effort into community organizations including the Girl Guides of Canada, St. James United Church, Wedgewood and Bloorlea Schools, as well as caring for her older siblings.
Shirley was always up for an adventure, travel, a game of cards, or a long chat, and showed her love for others by asking lots of questions. She loved cuddling under warm blankets and courageously experimented with various arts and crafts endeavours. Her favourite activity, however, was gathering with family and friends, and she loved hosting at the cottage, where we shared many amazing memories.

Shirley bravely battled cancer for the last two years of her life, and we are deeply grateful to the staff of Trillium Health Centres for their ongoing support and care, as well as the love and support from family and friends during this time. We are blessed for every moment we got to spend together and miss her dearly.

An informal celebration of Shirley will be held at a future date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trillium Health Partners Foundation (https://trilliumgiving.ca/), St. James Food Basket (https://stjamesfoodbasket.com/get-involved/donate/) or a charity
of your choice.
