Obituary of Dorothy Gorrell
DOROTHY IRENE GORRELL
January 16, 1928
November 10, 2018
On November 10, 2018, Dorothy Irene Gorrell (nee
Johnston) died peacefully at home in the loving care of
family. Dorothy is survived by her children Phyllis (Terry
Hidichuk), George (Jennifer), Fred (Ani) and Edward
(Laura); her seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Jorge
Oliveira), Patrick, Neale, Elyse, Danielle, Liam, and Callum;
and her great-granddaughter Anna.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents Christine Irene
(nee Hughson) and William Lee Johnston and her siblings
Muriel, David, Terry and beloved sister Barbara.
Dorothy was born in 1928 near Orangeville, Ontario. She married George William
Gorrell in 1948, living in Toronto before moving to Morrisburg, Ontario to raise
their family. Dorothy and her children moved back to Toronto in the mid-1960’s.
She enjoyed work, shopping, reading and exercising at the gym. Some of her
favourite pastimes were watching tennis, avidly following politics and the
British monarchy. The family usually couldn’t keep up with her. She supported her
children and grandchildren in all their endeavours.
Dorothy was a remarkable example of strength of spirit, tenacity and courage. She
had a persistence that enabled her to negotiate all the twists and turns of life. These
qualities were amazing examples that all her descendants have tried to replicate.
She will be dearly missed.
Friends wishing to remember her may make a donation to the Canadian Cancer
Society, or a charity of their choice.
