Marty was a mentorly figure to me even though we had only a dozen or so interactions in real life (IRL as the kids like to say). However, that did not change how close I felt to him through reading and re-reading all his novels and inhabiting his literary world. I also had the unique pleasure of adapting his novels “The Assignment,” into a short film and “Frigate,” into a screenplay. Marty’s work taught me how to write on some level. He was a craftsmen of the written word who was technically accomplished, inventive and whimsical in equal measures. A rare combination. While his characters were often zany, the themes in his work are profound and serious. More than anything, Marty was a true role model, a man of many parts who performed them all in a way that was generous and sometimes awe-inspiring. They say never meet your heroes. I’m so glad I met Marty. I would like to extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends. —Jacob Stein and Briana Blades

A life well-lived and loved. Marty was a ton of fun on set or in audition, on the very few times I was fortunate to be there. A loss for certain but a wealth of memories too.

There is/was/never will be anyone like Marty Myers. Marty was a one of a kind and jack of all trades - a very unusual combination. Marty hired me for my very first job as a copywriter a long time ago and really was my original writing teacher. I learned so much from him.
He was funny, determined, relentless and he never gave up. And his creativity, whether writing a slogan, a TV script or a novel always shone through.
Over the years, I kept up the relationship with Marty, who I always considered a mentor and guide. And I was always taken by his passion for the word and joy for life.
I'll miss Marty a lot. And I want to send my thoughts and sympathies to Colleen, Lori and Brad.
As the junior copywriter on the team Marty led, it was my responsibility to write the copy (that no one read) that sat between the headline and tagline that Marty wrote (and everyone remembered).
There was one ad I'll always remember. It was for a new sewing machine and Marty's pithy, punny headline — three words —said it all: Sew Much Better.
That's what we I think we can now say about Marty's long and loving life. The world is sew much better to have known him.

Dear Colleen, it was fun to have you and Marty across the street for a few decades. Laughing moments like Marty with your old dog saying he was "taking him for a stand". His memory is a blessing.
Fondly, Ann over the road

Fred Ball posted a condolence

Dear Myers Family:
I extend condolences to you all on the passing of your beloved Martin. My name is Fred Ball, and I am the younger son of Louis Ball who for many years owned Balls' Pharmacy, 831 College Street (corner Ossington) in Toronto. I was born in 1945, by which time Martin very likely was no longer delivering prescriptions on that bicycle bearing the "Ball's To You in 15" sign; but please know how pleased I was to read in Martin's obituary that being a Ball's Pharmacy delivery boy might very well have influenced him in his choice of a writing career. Benjamin Franklin once wrote: "Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing". I suspect that Martin did both. May his soul rest in peace.

Gilbert Frigate lost his male appendage in the men’s room of the Rialto Theatre. That’s how the novel Frigate began and I heard the whole thing read in person by the author himself. Marty Myers. In my last year of university I took a creative writing course and he was our instructor. In each class students read their work out loud, Marty included, and it was the best course any of us ever had. Marty was the first person who really edited my work and instilled the love of writing. He also taught two valuable lessons – throw your ego out the window, and remember the reader.
I was saddened to hear of his passing at age 96 and recall the last time we met, a long-delayed lunch when he was pushing 90. I couldn’t believe he was that age, but it was him. Tall and thin. Maybe a little thinner than before. But he was still Marty, a writer with this addiction to putting words together and making people laugh and while they were laughing, or maybe afterward, realizing there was something profound in what he was telling us about the human condition.
My big assignment in that class was writing a one-act play that would be performed by third-year drama students and Marty came to see it. When I got married we extended an invitation and he was there with his wife Colleen, and over the years we kept in touch giving each other blurbs for novels and saying to hang in there.
Marty was always a good friend and supporter. Maybe his best advice was when I told him about this gig doing a newspaper column.
“Don’t take yourself too seriously,” he said.
He was right about that. And about mortality, too.
Condolences to the family from Jerry Amernic and wife Dorothy.
