Nigel was in and out of my life since I was 14 years old. He was a good influence, a bad influence(in the best way possible) and just an overall great human. Although it’s been years since I’ve seen him we have always known what was happening in each others lives. I will miss him immensely, just knowing he was in the world made me happy. My heart goes out to his family and I’m sending all my love to you. I love you Dave and I’m so sorry you lost your big brother.

Nigel joined The School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts at Centennial College in September 2023. He was highly recommended by Barry Waite who introduced me to Nigel via email. Here is an excerpt from Nigel’s email message about the opportunity to teach: “My entire career has focussed on coaching, mentoring, developing, and leading very successful Teams both in the Hospitality world as well as the broader Luxury Guest Experience role. I excel at and love this teaching component and at this crossroad on my career path, it is teaching that I passionately want to pursue. The past few years have toppled the Hospitality world, and when you add that to what seemed to be a generational shift away from the service world, the industry as a whole is lacking the energy and buzz that was once inherent. When I first started as a dishwasher at age 15, there was an excitement amongst my peers and the management about the thrill of the business - there was a real passion that I find missing from many hospitality experiences today. I would love to become the excited Prof, who brings passion to the students while teaching them to excel on any path they choose.” – Nigel Mahabir August 2023 Last winter 2024, Nigel was a mentor for two Food and Beverage Management students. He invested much time inspiring both students with different aspirations. Nigel continued to stay in touch with his students and looked forward to creating another mentorship opportunity this year. He had found his new passion. The school is deeply saddened by this loss, not only for our school but for our industry.

Thanks for sharing that Michelle. Nigel relished his role at Centennial and the work he was doing with the students. I'm glad he was able to find his joy, even if for too short a time. The school, staff, and students were incredibly important to him.

Nigel was an amazing mentor and colleague. His passion for the Hospitality industry was felt inside and outside of the classroom. He inspired students with his passion, heartfelt dedication and care. Very sorry for this loss, I send my prayers and condolences.

I can’t even begin to count how many enjoyable evenings during our high school years were spent with Nigel in Chris May’s living room listening to music and enjoying each other’s company…great memories I will carry for my lifetime. So sorry to hear of the untimely passing of such a sweet soul.
