I am deeply saddened to be writing this. My sincerest condolences to Neil's family. Neil and I were classmates at RMC. I got to know him a little better in the last couple of months because we were both fighting cancer. We shared stories of treatment and hope with the conviction that we were both coming out the other side and that someday we would hoist a cold one on the boat and remember the better days. I was deeply saddened when I learned of his passing because I had already constructed a future for us. See you on the other side, bud.

It is with shock and sadness that I write this; I was not prepared to hear of the passing of one of my mentors. Neil was a check pilot while we were stationed at 436 (T) Squadron in Trenton in the early 90’s.
Despite seeking out and carrying the responsibility of maintaining the inflexible standards of a military transport pilot over his peers, Neil was always ready with a smile and an engaging attitude. He was as friendly and helpful to us ‘newbies’ as he was professional with his job, and I might not be where I am today (also flying at Air Canada) if he had not been a part of my formative years as a pilot.
Since I was posted to Greenwood, NS to fly the Hercules in the Search and Rescue Role and Neil moved on to Air Canada, I have had few and only fleeting chances to see him: mostly in the Flight Planning office as each of us was preparing for different flights. I find myself regretting not taking the time to engage him more now that he is gone; then again, it never crossed my mind that he would be gone so soon.
God’s Speed, Neil. You are already missed by many, but will live on in the parts of you that you shared with us.

Neil and our Girls grew up at the same time. They also attended Sir Robert Borden High School. It seems hard to believe that he is gone at such a young age... Our heartfelt sympathies go out to you, Ian and the rest of the Family. .Love The Mathers Family

It is very hard to think that Neil is no longer with us. He was a part of our extended family and has been since the mid-80's when we were all posted to Trenton; he as a Herc driver and I as a Controller in the Tower. He became the "son" we never had and the big brother to his 2 little "sisters". To Tori and Chris - we deeply feel your loss. To Neil's family - thank you for sharing him with us. To all his friends and colleagues - aren't we lucky we got to know him. REST IN PEACE " son"……! Until we meet again.

As John Fletcher has shared a photo, reposted here, Neil was the front and centre of 14 Platoon at Canadian Forces Officer Candidate School at CFB Chilliwack, July-August 1980. Additionally, we came to appreciate his friendship as he joined RMC as a member of 6 (Brant) Squadron and studied in the Applied Science program, 1982-84. Often our memories are fleeting but we recall without a doubt that Neil was full of exuberant energy and generous in kindness and friendship. We knew that his passion was in flying as he often donned a lapel pin of a jet in flight on the College blazer. We know that Neil has graced us with friendship on earth and has soared to new heights in flight, now joining the grace of God above.

Nelson and I were so very saddened to learn of Neil’s passing, and want to express to his family and loved ones, our heartfelt condolences and the assurance of our prayers.
Neil and I first met in the summer of 1980, when we were both in the same platoon for our Basic Officer Training. You’ll see Neil — front and centre — in the attached photo of our platoon BBQ, (and me just two places to his left.) Neil and I also graduated together, (both of us in Applied Science) from RMC in 1984. Although our paths, since RMC, took us in different directions, I have always cherished the memories, and delighted in those occasions when we were able to be together, and to re-connect.
We deeply grieve Neil’s passing, but we also give thanks for the friendship and joy he shared with us and with so many others. May he Rest In Peace and rise in glory.

The Ellwood family are so saddened to hear of the loss of Neil. As fellow family members at Knox, we all grew up together. Although Neil was older than Mike and I, he was a presence in our lives at both SRB and Knox although I'm sure he thought we were just the annoying friends of his younger siblings Ross and Scott! From Mike, Dianne and our Mom Sue, we are all keeping you in our thoughts.

Neil was an amazingly kind and fun man to work with. He always had time for a laugh and a story, even in a quick pass-by in the hall. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.

Neil was a military classmate of mine in both Royal Roads and RMC. One thing that I will always remember is his easy smile and the laugh that would follow. I am going to miss that.
A few months ago, Neil told me about his diagnosis and I shared with him a dream that I had recently had. In that dream, my wife and I were on our way overseas to Europe on vacation. And upon boarding the plane I learned that Neil was going to be our pilot. I told him that story and we both laughed at the idea. We both agreed we needed to make that dream a reality. It will always be one of my greatest regrets that we didn't make that happen.

Neil shared a brief period of his life with Maureen and I, starting with when I was a Squadron Commander at Royal Roads, Victoria in 1980-81. He was an enthusiastic member of the Flying Club and it was obvious that he had a passion for aviation, which proved itself out with his career. A couple of years later, when I got married and moved to Ottawa, his parents provided lots of good advice as Maureen and I adjusted to the arrival of our first child. That family is all good people.
The last photos I have of Neil are from 1983 when we flew to Kincardine for a beach party with my family but I have followed his full life through the years and communicated occasionally.
Fly high Neil.

My condolences to the family for your loss. I knew Neil growing up and attending Knox United Church as well as getting rides to Air Cadets with him from time to time. Our paths crossed again later in life as we both worked as pilots at Air Canada. Neil was a great guy and I am saddened by his passing.

I wish to express my sincere condolences to Neil’s family and friends.
I met Neil, his parents, and brothers while we attended RMC together. He was a very good friend to many of us. While I lost touch with him in later years, I know that he lived a full life and positively influenced many people. He will, indeed, be missed by many, many folks who cared about him.
May you have fair winds and a following sea, Neil.

My deepest condolences to all the Macdonalds. I can't believe he's gone already. I think one of my favourite photos of Neil is the one I've attached. I think it embodies his love of flying, his desire to help others via the Dreams Take Flight organization and his wonderful silliness that he shared with all of us. Neil, you had a way of making people feel safe and taken care of. I will miss your giggle and your deep gentle eyes. Rest In peace, fly forever free. Lisa (Wormworth) Campbell
