I had considered speaking at Arthur's wake but I found myself a bit too emotional after hearing how Arthur helped so many people with such distinct backgrounds. I have instead shared my thoughts below on what made Arthur an extraordinary human being and Father-in-Law.
I consider myself truly privileged to have had Arthur as my Father-in-Law. He was compassionate and unassuming which are rare qualities in men with great intellect. We loved it when he visited us in Montreal. I have fond memories of my kids (Justin and Lauren) giggling, when they were young, while playing cards with him for hours (see attached photos). Arthur would also read to them with great care and patience - I was so impressed with him. He was always willing to help us and he offered his wisdom when asked. I was lucky to have him to myself from time to time and we chatted for hours about many diverse subjects with Irish whiskey sometimes in hand. I felt honoured when he spoke to me about a few of his involved family memories since he rarely spoke about himself. We often spoke about our Irish family vacation together which allowed my entire family to hear about his upbringing. During this trip, he told us about these stories which he thought were amusing so I thought I would share:
* When WW2 was starting, Arthur said that one of his neighbors, an elderly women, said over and over again: "Hilter" is coming .... (she could not pronounce: Hitler).
* When Arthur left home to walk to school as a young boy, his neighbour often times opened the front door and called Arthur: Protestant bastard and then quickly closed the door right afterward.
* In a neighbouring town to where he lived (Belgrade Square, Dublin), Arthur showed us the only home, In a set of row homes, which had double front doors. He said that the home was modified (from a single to double doors) to allow a chubby monarch to get in.
During this same trip, Arthur showed us his childhood family home with pride which had a rare monkey puzzle tree, planted by his dad, on the property. Author really wanted to find his house and thanks to Barb Jones's tenacity we did - Barb spotted the tree which allowed us to find the house - Arthur was so happy she did! The homeowners invited us in for tea and listened carefully to Author speak about the history of their home.
Arthur would often visit on my Son's (Justin) birthday. They both loved a great meal as evidenced by the attached photo which shows Arthur buying Justin a monster lobster meal which Justin enjoyed immensely.
In 2016, Pam and Arthur decided to plant a tree at our house in Montreal so we could remember Arthur. We have uploaded photos of us planting the tree with him. Arthur was helping us of course - this was typical for Arthur as mentioned.
I know that Arthur had a great long life but we will miss this genuinely humble gentleman who made others better by example. Our family will always remember you Arthur - Rest in peace.

Dear Pamela,
Our deepest sympathies to you, Dan the kids and your extended family. We fondly remember your Dad and you were blessed because he was a wonderful man. In particular, we remember the night he came over for supper and Makiko had cooked the duck Dan had given her. Your Dad enjoyed the wonderful canard aux oranges and we all had a great time. He was fun to be with and we will miss him. May he rest in peace. Makiko, Manrico Mario and Matteo.

Condolences from Eileen and Harvey Simmons. Arthur was a wonderful, lively, and very witty fellow. At Margarita's many parties he hovered in the background, helping serve the food, often commenting on things in a gentle, wry way.
He as also a mine of information on the history of psychiatry, a topic of particular interest to Harvey. He was amazingly vigorous well into his late years and could be seen at the Glendon gym exercising his impressively large frame. He will be missed. All our love to Margarita and to her and Arthur's family.

Dear Margarita and Arthur’s family,
I want to express how truly sorry I am for your loss. I was once told that those we hold closest to our hearts never truly leave us. They live on in the kindness they have shared and the love they brought into our lives. May the loving memory of Arthur and all moments shared bring you and your family peace, comfort and they may forever hold in your heart.
May care and love of those around you provide comfort and peace to get you through the days ahead.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences during these difficult times.

Arthur became a fixture in our lives and the lives of our children starting in the early 80s. Since then we have shared many hours of conversation and good times, either in California or in Toronto, and more recently in New York. Arthur always went out of his way to entertain us on our visits north, taking us to the gym, booking tickets for plays and musicals, and at least two visits to Ottawa. He basically went out of his way to be the perfect host and to welcome us into his home. Somewhere along the way, it became a tradition of sorts to bring a bottle of single-malt scotch on our visits - which we happily helped him to consume. At age 91 he made his way with Margarita to central New York to celebrate the birth of our grandchild - we were all thrilled and honored by this extra effort on his part!
Arthur was down to earth and truly a gentle and kind man who brought out the best in others. We will miss him terribly.

It was with such sadness and shock that I read the obituary in the Globe and Mail. My Dad just had lunch with Arthur the other day, a monthly treat that Dad always looked forward to. Arthur was Dad's best friend: both Trinity Graduates, both Irish to a tee. Arthur was truly special. He was so thoughtful, loyal, considerate, interesting and interested. Always curious to know what we were doing and where we were going. He really cared about people.
What a beautiful man. I'll miss him. And my Dad is heart broken.
Big Hugs to you all - to Margarita, Joyce, Barbara, Pamela, and Jennifer
Alison Wiley and my Dad, Alan Murray Wiley
