David has been my neighbour, my colleague and my friend for over 35 years. I have such fond memories of David peacefully gardening and having a wise calming influence in the neighbourhood. He was a smart and intelligent lawyer who could always be relied on for sound and insightful advice. And as a friend, he was kind with a subtle sense of humour and always wise. I offer Phyllis my heartfelt condolences and my friendship as she navigates a way forward. May David’s memory bring peace, Shari Stein

David was my oldest friend. We went to law school (McGill) together sharing the anxiety and laughter. We moved to Toronto at the same time to embark on our legal careers; sharing more anxiety and laughter. Even then, David was a consummate and adventurous traveller. I would eagerly await each letter from afar that would exquisitely speak of experiences that felt far beyond my reach. And, when he returned it was often with a new habit that bemused his friends. From Jamaica he returned with an even deeper affection for plant material. From another trip he returned insisting that he would only eat with his hands. It was all so David. We spent countless nights watching Monday Night Football, eating enormous quantities of pizza and "inhaling" David's delicious home made muffins. We shared a spectacular trip to Newfoundland, long runs through the city ravines and hours of just talking. When I married Alison in 1982 David was my only choice as best man, because he was. Over the years our lives and careers progressed with the inevitable changes and ups and downs. Suddenly David was ill. From our telephone discussions together it was clear that David's illness had not robbed him of his grace, gentleness and spirit. Phyllis took exceptional care of him over these last years and I know that he was very loved and comforted.
Alison and I are profoundly and deeply saddened by David's death. May his memory be a blessing

I’m so sorry to hear of David’s passing. My heartfelt condolences to his life partner Phylis and to his brother Michael. I knew that David and I shared a love of travel and photography as I would hear about David’s adventures around the world from Michael. I also knew of his long illness, but David was generous enough to offer some medical information to me despite the challenge he was going through. I’m grateful to him. Rest in Peace David.

I am writing here to offer my heartfelt condolences to Phylis Whyte, long time life partner of David, and to David's brother, Michael Leibson and his family.
David was a friend and neighbour of my childhood, with whom I had a unique long term relationship that included as well those very early years when we were both newly married, various travel experiences, some mutual friends, countless recipes, visits together in Toronto and in the Laurentian countryside, and our deep pleasure when he found his life partner, Phylis, with whom we also shared much friendship and camaraderie. I counted him, for many years as a very good friend, and my memories of our exchanges over time bring me a sense of sweetness and good fortune. David was an excellent basketball player, a poetic musician, an accomplished cook and from his more recent endeavours, a teacher of english who I imagined from his enthusiasm, to be deeply appreciated by his students.
Although I lost touch with him in the last few years, I wished here to honour the special light that he brought to my life and surely to the lives of many, many others.
