Rest in peace John, you were my big brother and I always admired your wisdom and intelligence. I think that my first realization of just how "with it" you were was that time when we were both standing in the middle of Richardson Street in West Hartlepool and somehow I wondered how heavy the earth is and you said "we know how heavy the earth is" and I asked "how heavy is it?" and you said "it weighs six sextillion tons". We were both just little kids and I remember the occasion so clearly since it impressed me so much that you knew such a number. Your life was one of discovery and knowledge and you taught me more than just how heavy a planet we live on. You have left it now but your spirit will never leave me. Thanks for all you did for your family. From Michael, a grateful brother.

I recall an evening where it seems John was lucky that I was such a matter-of-fact little brother. One evening when I was about 12 I answered the phone and a man asked me if John was at home. I stated that he was not and when asked, told him I didn't know where he was or when he'd be back. He thanked me and that was that. Later, I told my mom and she was very alarmed. It seems that John and another man were in some sort of tie for a prize and the call was to find out if John wanted to split the value 50-50 or do a final draw. I guess my mother was to give the man John's decision but since I intervened and they did not know what that decision was, they did a final draw. John won a brand new 1967 Pontiac Parisienne! I was only about 13 when you got married and moved out, John, so I don't have a whole lot of memories of things we did together in those days. Still, I mourn the loss of you, my big brother.
