My memories of Cathi began when I was a baby, my Mom (Mary lou Burt) and Cathi met in prenatal classes when my Mom was pregnant with my sister (Jen Burt-Yanoff) in 1974. My Mom and Cathi remained friends for a long time. Juli and Jen became best friends all the way through University and Cathi and my Mom did lots of things together. Cathi will always be remembered for entertaining and feeding guests, contesting around kitchen tables, couponing, making Japanese food, swimming in the Woburn pool, researching things, staying up late, vacations to……, guiding, gardening and her love of her granddaughter. When I moved into my condo Cathi knew my space was small and she prepared spices in all these small cutesy containers. She will greatly be missed. 2 photos below: group photo Cathi previous husband, Juli and my Dad Stuart Burt, 2nd photo Cathi feeding me. I used to call her Aunt Cathi

To: Juli Mori and her family; Emily and Will
It was a great loss to lose your Mom and my sister, Catherine (Cathi) nee Newell) Mori, Normandin.
I remember Cathi, as a trailblazer in the Newell family. She was an A+ student in grade school; skipping grade 7. The following year, her goal was to attend the prestigious St. Joseph’s College (Catholic) High School; for girls. In order to attend, Cathi had to write the entrance exam and win one of the few, ‘full’ scholarships. Madeline (Mom) Newell was the Matriarch of our family and what she decided; was the law. Parents in the Catholic school system, had to pay tuition for grades 9 - 13. To fulfill Cathi’s dream, she had to do it all. It was remarkable, that after skipping grade 7; she would accomplish so much; being one of the youngest in her grade 8 class. Her job was not complete. Madeline made it clear to Cathi, that she must continue to get A+ average; continue to get the full scholarship each and every year of high school at St. Joseph’s. And, Cathi did just that.
For a younger sister, it was a hard act to follow. We shared a bedroom during those school years. I would watch Cathi post long sheets of conjugated French verbs all over our bedroom walls. Each night, she would practice them; for hours. St. Joseph’s standards were set very high. I know personally, because I attended grade 9, at St. Joseph’s Morrow Park (Bayview and Steeles Avenues). That’s also where, Cathi entered the convent, that same year, but I was not allowed any visitation, just because the school was on the same grounds. No, visitation was only once per month for her family visit; on a Sunday afternoon. She remained in the convent for 1-1/2 years; leaving at 19 years of age.
It was most difficult for her to remain living at our parents’ home, after that. Cathi moved out on her own 6 months later and began taking computer courses at night to be competitive for a job in the medical field. It was during this time, that she met Mike Mori, Juli’s Dad. They began their partnership in their home on Bowood Avenue and had Juli. Cathi had good Mother instincts; quite knowledgeable in the medical field and applied them as needed in our Newell family and later with her own.
In 1984, Cathi and Mike, were my best physical and emotional support; before and after I had my son, Mark. I spent a lot of time at their home, in the 1st 6 months, as a new mother. Mike would soothe a fussy Mark, in his arms. Cathi did that too and, so much more. She advised me, “Get Mark on a ‘routine’ before he is 3 months old.” Good advice. By 6 weeks, he was sleeping through the night (8pm - 8am) with no feedings during the night. I owe a lot to them. Cathi would also come to my home, and look after Mark; so I could do my clients’ book-keeping at their office. I relied on her experience as a Mom, kindness to me, and love for her nephew. She was there with me, when I took Mark and Jessica ‘shopping for skates’ in her neighbourhood. She had told me to park on a certain street; only to find my car had been towed away when we returned. It was okay, she helped me get my car back, loaned me some of the fees, and she drove the kids to our home on Chiefswood Sq. (NW Scarb). It’s now part of TO. They had fallen asleep in her car, when we drove to get mine back. Anthony and I made to the party; even though we were a little late arriving. Cathi was known for being late, so this was just a normal afternoon with Aunt Cathi.
Cathi and I, shared much more in our extended family We had a pact; not allowing our parents to compare “us” anymore! Madeline would often start with, “We were at Cathi and Mike’s for dinner last night and they gave us …. Blah! Blah! Blah! The next time, it was Anthony (& Pat - me) took us out for Brunch at the Holiday Inn Hotel. There was so much good food and … bought us … Blah! Blah! Blah! No, no more of this!
We agreed, if one of us had our parents over; wow! That gave the other, a night off. Lol We took turns, Cathi and I; one year I had everyone in Newell family for Christmas and the next year; Cathi did it. We celebrated Thanksgiving and birthdays; this way too. Photos included of Mark and Edward's shared’ birthday in mid-August and another in September for Jessica. Photos included. Cathi had her annual July birthday party at her home. For other celebrations, we took turns there too. It was only at Easter, that Anthony and I, took my parents for Brunch (because of tax season).
Unfortunately, I think it all changed when Cathi and Mike broke up in 1992. I felt no different, but I feel that Cathi had changed. She told me 1 year later, “You moved up (new house in Unionville) and I (Cathi) moved out (of Bowood Avenue home).” Cathi did move on, when she met and married Len Normandin.
Cathi was overjoyed to have Len’s son, David. She became a grandmother overnight and she was so happy. Juli had graduated from university around this time, so more to celebrate. Cathi was at her best when it came to family and celebrating. We got that quality, from our Dad (Edward). He would often take the family for a’visit to our relatives in Boston’ on a whim; by car.
Our Uncle Leo and Stella (Madeline’s sister) often found all of us on their doorstep; arriving without notice; for the weekend. It was a long drive from Montreal to Boston, by car. All 8 (7 Newell’s & Uncle Marty; Mom’s brother) of us travelling by car; across the US border. It took us ~6 hours and no one knew we were coming. I have fond memories of those trips. They became less frequent as we got older. Cathi and I shared a trip back from Boston, when I was 12 years old. Cathi was almost 17 years.
Cathi attended our 1st cousin, Marylee and Mark’s wedding; with Juli and Mike Mori. See photo of Marylee with her parents, Stella and Leo Rumbolt. The following year, they went to Stella’s daughter, Lori Ann Rumbolt’s wedding in Boston. Mark was newborn in 1984, so I did not attend.
In 1983, our 1st cousin Debbie (nee Korsorwich), got married in Montreal. So many of Madeline’s (Snow) family and extended family attended. Photos included.
Our 1st cousin, Marie Snow, married in Peterborough and some of our Snow and Newell families attended. Photos included. When Cathi and Dad were in attendance; you could be sure there was much partying going on.
Cathi and Len Normandin married; October 19, 2019. Her extended families from Boston, NH, and Montreal were wedding guests. Photos included; 1st cousin Diane (nee Newell) and husband, Fred, Aunt Isabelle (sister-in-law to Edward Newell), Hannah and Richard Newell (1sr cousin and son of Isabelle; brother to Diane). Juli was Cathi’s Maid of Honour; David was Len’s Best Man; and her niece, Jessica, was a Jr. Bridesmaid, and nephew, Mark, was a Jr. Usher. Pictures include, Mark walking his grandmother, Madeline, to her seat. Mark and Jessica, walked (me, their mother) to my seat. It was a happy time for Cathi.
Cathi, Juli, and Will; we’re guests at Mark and Sara’s wedding in June 2013. Cathi enjoyed herself that night; as seen in the family video (not shown). Our 1st cousin, Debbie (nee Korsorwich) Pealow, and 2 of her daughters (Kristi and Tamara) Pealow; were also there in the family’s private video.
The later photos, were taken of Patricia (nee Newell, Lombardi) and Charles wedding in June 2018; at Toronto City Hall. The last group of photos include Mark and wife, Sara, with their son (Cathi’s great-nephew), Leo. Hope this has given some further insight into the type of good person, that Cathi was.
I’m sorry to say, that I will not be in attendance on Saturday. However; my sister, Cathi, may be gone to rest, she continues to live on in my heart.
All my love, Juli, Emily, and Will,
Aunt Patricia (Patti) Durham, NB.
