It was not until I retired that I had any regular contact only had close contact with Alan. As he was a little older he had worked out some of the joys of retirement and I was fortunate to become a member of the Alan Horne Foursome — golf, of course. We played a couple of times a week, mostly at Humber Valley, and while we enjoyed our golf (and Alan made sure it was a real game by being our faithful score-keeper) the main point of our playing was to sit with a pint after we had completed our round of 18 holes. At that point Alan would review the scores and lead off the conversation in all sorts of directions. He was incredibly friendly, positive, and a sparkling raconteur. He had a fund of good stories, jokes and the warmth of his spirit made each meeting one we all savoured and wanted to repeat.
When Alan gave up driving and playing golf eventually he was sorely missed by our small group but he has never been forgotten. His enjoyment of life and his enthusiastic embrace of a broad variety of interests were a model to emulate. I am so very sorry for your loss Bonnie and I send you my very best wishes as your life goes on.
