I am one of many who have eternal gratitude for the articles Doug Mackey wrote about my father and grandfather. I am deeply saddened that my promise in 2008 when we met to publish my father's memoirs is only now being realized.
The NADON family formerly of Mattawa, and the family of Zeph Nadon Park Ranger in Algonquin Park (1908-1946) and his son Maurice J Nadon (Commissioner of the RCMP in 1977-1981) will always be grateful for his eloquent word portraits.

It's not too often that the first time you meet someone that you instantly become friends. That is what happened when I met Doug. I had a small repair shop in North Bay and one day this Honda Civic came rolling into the yard with the front bumper hanging off on one side. Doug got out and said can you put this bumper back on. I said sure but what seemed odd to me is that there was no scrape marks or impact type damage on the bumper. It was just hanging there. I asked him to leave it with me for a while and I would fix it but I said what happened here. He said well I was back in on an old road to a sawmill site and it got pretty rough so I guess I hooked it on a rock or an old stump or something. That was all Doug had to say to me. I my self had grown up in and around sawmills all my life and read everything I could about the subject. My grandfather had built many of the sawmills in the area and to the north up to Timmins. Since that first meeting we had many long discussions afterword about sawmills and lumbering and every time Doug and Paul wrote a new book he would drop by with a signed copy. The Honda would also be back from time to time to get the front bumper, splash shields or fender aprons put back in place. I sure will miss you Doug. My condolences to the Mackey family. Rest in Peace my good friend. Cliff Campbell

We will forever be indebted to Doug and Paul for writing about Kiosk and Fossmill. They could easily just be forgotten to time, but the books will live on.

I’ve got many fond memories of Doug and Elly and time well-spent on Bear Mountain with Allison and our close group of friends, a highlight during our high school years for many of us. Doug and Elly were a pleasure to spend time with, both so warm and welcoming; both one-of-a-kind characters that had a wonderful life together. Their home was an inviting oasis of animated story-telling, engaging conversation and plenty of laughs. Elly would do our astrological charts and talk about them excitedly and Doug always had a great story that he would tell in a hilarious way. Doug had a great wit and really appreciated the absurdity of situations and was always in on the joke. Whenever we would call Allison, Doug would answer the phone with his standard “Doug Mackey, by cracky!” that never got old no matter how many times we would call Allison in a single night. We shared things with Doug and Elly and felt connected on a meaningful level; they were admired by all of us and made us feel special. The reference to the cabin that Marty mentions in his tribute made me smile as it was the same cabin that years later would host some of our more epic Bear Mountain parties, that are still talked about in certain circles. I have such lovely and lasting memories of the Mackeys and am so grateful for their kindness and friendship in my younger years. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family at this sad time.

Many of my earliest, most treasured memories are of spending time with Doug and Elly up on Bear Mountain. I will also treasure getting to know him these last few years. With him living in Toronto we spent a lot of time together. Goodbye Grandpa Doug.

My memories of my grandfather will always be closely tied to childhood summers spent at the log cabin on the top of Bear Mountain in Chisholm Township. From the age of 4 well into high school, I spent most of my summer holidays up north, with my siblings, my parents, and Grandpa Doug and Grandma Elly. Grandpa would take us on hikes deep into the woods behind the log cabin, carve walking sticks for us, and take us along when he went visiting his friends and neighbours around Chisholm, Powassan, and North Bay. I always enjoyed his "landscaping" efforts, which usually involved him wielding a chain saw to remove a bunch of trees, and eventually burning huge piles of brush in spectacular bonfires. When I was a little older, I'd join him on research trips further afield to Mattawa, Tamagami, and Algonquin. Grandpa was a great storyteller, and led a varied and exciting life, and my favorite part of any trips with him was getting to hear him tell tales. I always admired how active he was, both physically and mentally. He always had a million projects on the go, and could easily hike faster and chop wood more efficiently than me well into his old age. As a kid, my grandpa seemed unstoppable, absolutely in his element in those woods up on Bear Mountain. Love you grandpa, I'll miss you.

My deepest sympathy to Doug`s Family. I had the privilege of knowing Doug and Eleanor somewhat later in our lives. The times shared were memorable that involved the Arts principally but extended into friendship and collaboration. Doug was tireless in his support of the Art Community in North Bay and Powassan Ontario. Giving his time and knowledge willingly he impacted greatly our sphere of interest. I will be forever grateful to him for our times together and the resulting accomplishments.

Picture a skinny 14 year old in the early 1970s with a ponytail brought home by your daughter and he starts hanging around, and won’t leave. That’s me. I had never met a family like the Mackeys and wanted to absorb every bit of the experience of being around all the fun, laughter, food, arguments, the art, and of course love. 66 Davenport, a truly open house of comings and goings. Doug set the tone for it all with his generosity of heart, how he created space for everyone, juggled all the balls of what at times must have seemed like a chaotic household with all the coming and going of everyone’s friends and lovers. Ellie tolerated it all with her warmth and love and wry sense of humor.
His humor is also what I remember. And never letting anyone take themselves too seriously. And letting you be you and if you wanted advice he’d give it. And if you wanted to drive his Jaguar, he let you. But then when he asked will you help us build a log house in Northern Ontario you of course say yes. It was a family affair and what occupied my weekends for months, years. But that’s where I learned carpentry, which became my summer job, in fact my part time job throughout high school and college and I have Doug to thank for that (and Eric and Paul and Eva and Ellie and Allison who let me share Doug with them, tolerated me, this appendage to the family!).
In the background of all this was his job, which at the time I never understood, and he never lorded over anyone what he did 9 to 5 because when he was at home he was at home. But I knew he had a passion for his work and because he was in education management he was devoted to helping others. Again, this generosity of heart, creating space for others, helping people, and living life with such gusto all the time, with an energy and a commitment to doing good things, connecting with other people, and do it all in what always seemed like a good mood! I never once heard Doug complain about a single thing. He’d listen to your complaints but never complained about anything.
In any lifetime you come to realize that living in a state of gratitude to those who helped make your life better is existentially important. I had the chance to reconnect with Doug last April to express that gratitude, which I had done when I had the chance to see him over the years. So here, Doug, here in this moment, here from my heart, I say thank you and I love you, and I also thank all of the Mackey family for letting me part of his life.
