Obituary of Sandra June Schanck

It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Sandra June Schanck, on the afternoon of July 20, 2023, at the age of 77, in the Palliative Care Unit at Credit Valley Hospital, Mississauga. She will now join her late husband, Maurice “Moe” Schanck, as well as her first husband, Edward “Ted” Lynn Rooney, in the heavens above. She is the loving and devoted mother to Stephen, Darryl (Anne), & Cynthia, and stepmother to the Schanck families. She is also survived by her wonderful grandchildren Christie, Jesse, Leila, Danielle, James, Jason, Amanda, Brooklynn, Olivia, Samantha, William, Nicole & Victoria, and her great-grandchildren Lucas, Nicholas, Ryan, Brynn, Annie, Teddy & Rylee.

Mom will be dearly missed by all her brothers & sisters: Bruce (Lorraine) Rojik, Donny (Christa) Rojik, Karen Stockton, Danny (Brenda) Rojik, Vicki (Garry) Shipston & Stan (Rita) Komfolio, plus the Rooney families and all the many nieces & nephews & friends. She is predeceased by her parents Orla Komfolio & Anthony Mariano, step-fathers Daniel Rojik & Nick Komfolio, brother Joe (Evelyn) Mariano, and brother-in-law Mike Stockton.

Mom was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario (formerly Fort William) on June 27, 1946. Being the eldest girl in a family of 8 children, she had many responsibilities; ones she chose, and others she didn’t. She moved to the GTA when she was a young wife and mother, and never left. Although, she always loved to return home to T.B. to visit her family and old friends. She was very supportive of her loved ones, whether she was hanging out in the hockey rink or on the sidelines of a soccer field. She enjoyed the simple pleasures in life: cooking, gardening, crafts, reading, and Sunday Morning Church Service. Mom loved hosting holiday dinners and vacationing in Florida. Her & Moe would walk the beach for hours to get their “receipt” before heading back to the Great White North, and enjoyed the many sunsets.

In lieu of flowers please consider donating to one of Mom’s favourite charities: Habitat for Humanity, Heart & Stroke Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, and Ovarian Cancer Society.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside funeral will be held Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at  Sunset Memorial Gardens in Thunder Bay. Mom will be laid to rest beside her mother and brother. A post-funeral gathering will be announced at that time.

Mom will be thought of with each new flower bud, setting sun, and the smell of coconut.
