Obituary of Walter James Sutherland

Walter James Sutherland passed away peacefully August 1st at his home in Toronto surrounded by family, a few months after celebrating his 80th birthday with steak and song (and a captain’s hat). Born in Toronto, one of eight of the Sutherland clan, he graduated from Toronto Metropolitan University’s business program and was the proud recipient of the gold medal for general proficiency.

He and his wife Lynn shared over 52 years of marriage. After spending some time in Vancouver, they departed to travel the globe. On their return to Canada, his entrepreneurial drive led the pair to start a series of successful businesses. (Technically not all successful, but as Walt was fond of saying, you can put anything you want into an obituary.)

He enjoyed card games all of his life, especially his weekly poker nights in Florida, as well as Puerto Escondido, Mexico, and in his condo complex where he had to overcome the initial resistance of the board. It was very hard to persuade him to miss a game regardless of the reason. He also loved stock car races, country music, and fishing, until he started feeling sorry for the fish. His idea of a good day was one where he was asked to make a spreadsheet.

His direct way of dealing with people was loved by many but did ruffle some feathers—which always surprised him. He was incredibly proud of his two children and their spouses, and grateful for the adventures and fun he shared with the friends and family in his life. His deep thoughtfulness as a husband kept local florists in business. He truly counted himself a very fortunate man.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn; children, Sam and Suzanne, and their partners, Ashley and Graham; and siblings, including Sara, Joe, Mike, Ian, and their families.

As a man who always knew when to hold them and when to fold them, he departs on his own terms. In lieu of flowers, he would be happy if you made a donation to a charity of your choice.
